2011 was a year of intense title fights, with Toshiyuki Moriuchi taking the Meijin from Yoshiharu Habu, while Akira Watanabe and Habu traded major crowns. It was also the year of the Great East Japan Earthquake, and shogi events found ways to continue and support affected regions.

1. Major title matches

  • Meijin (69th): Challenger Toshiyuki Moriuchi defeated Yoshiharu Habu 4-3 to take the Meijin title.
  • Kisei (82nd): Yoshiharu Habu defended the Kisei title 3-0 against Koichi Fukaura.
  • O-i (52nd): Yoshiharu Habu took the O-i from Akihito Hirose 4-3.
  • Oza (59th): Akira Watanabe swept Yoshiharu Habu 3-0 to win his first Oza title.
  • Ryuo (24th): Akira Watanabe defended the Ryuo 4-1 against Tadahisa Maruyama.
  • Osho (60th): Toshiaki Kubo defended the Osho 4-2 against Masayuki Toyoshima.

2. Notable tournaments and new events

  • Ginga-sen (19th): Akira Watanabe won the tournament (his third title in the event).
  • Shinjin-O (42nd): Amihiko Sato won the Newcomer King tournament.
  • Kakogawa Seiryu-sen (1st): Kohei Funae won the inaugural edition.
  • Daiwa Securities Cup Net Shogi Saikyo-sen (5th): Tatsuya Sugai won the championship.
  • Fujitsu Cup Tatsujin-sen (19th): Yoshiharu Habu won the event.

3. Shogi and the 2011 earthquake

In the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, the shogi community kept an eye on the affected regions. The 24th Ryuo title match is remembered for holding multiple games in disaster-hit areas, and the post-match ceremony explicitly noted that Games 1, 4, and 5 were fought in the affected regions.
